Twenty Twenty-Two
100,000+ active installs · Rated 3.2/5 · Updated August 19, 2026
Twenty Twenty-Two is the free default block theme from the WordPress project. It is built on the Site Editor, so templates, colours and typography are changed through blocks and theme.json rather than classic theme options. It ships with dozens of block patterns and three colour style variations, and suits blogs, portfolios and simple business sites. Its limit is that it is deliberately plain, so most sites need extra styling or patterns added.
Pros
- Free, maintained by the WordPress project
- Full Site Editor templates and block patterns included
- Lightweight base with colour style variations
Cons
- Plain visual design; most sites need custom styling
- Customisation happens in the Site Editor, not classic Customizer options
